I know… a terrible pun to introduce our new Summer Reading Program, “Oceans of Possibilities,” beginning July 5, and finishing August 12. This summer, HLM is all about H20.

Summer is so much about water… whether it’s a warm drizzle like we’re having as I write this, or the lure of a cool pool, lake, river, or backyard sprinkler on a sultry afternoon. What’s the main ingredient in Popsicles (ok, aside from sugar)? Water. Who can think of summer fruit without watermelon?

Keeping this theme in mind, the HLM staff is busy prepping great STEAM crafts for kids, Story Walks, and weekly outdoor activities featuring, you guessed it, water. We even have a six-foot beach ball! We’ll also use some cool virtual reality goggles to explore the seabed.

But wait, where are the books? We’ve got a fantastic reading competition lined up… everyone gets their own small “aquarium,” and adds a sparkly fish for each book read. Once again, prizes will be awarded based on age group; 0-5 years (mum and dad can record the number of books read each week), 6-11 years, 12-18, and Adults.

Local author Sam Miller (“Memoir – Reasons Why I Left the Amish Community”) will join us on August 2, at 6:30 pm for a special session. We will be making water animals with origami on Mondays at 6:00 pm, from super easy penguins to graceful cranes. All are welcome. Just two of the events we have planned.

On August 19, our End of Summer Beach Party happens in the Community Room and lawn. Winners will be announced, and we’ll have lots of summer surprises, including a shadow puppet show.

We hope you and your family will participate in our Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program. Whatever you decide to do with this wonderful water season, stay safe and healthy.
