Frequently Asked Question

What is a hold?

Placing a hold on an item is requesting an item from the library system.

How do I place a hold?

There are 4 ways to place a hold on an item

  1. Use the app “North Country Libraries”,
  2.  Use the online catalog ncls.org
  3. Call the library at (315) 322-5673,
  4. Emal the library madlib@ncls.org

How will I know when to go to the library to pick up my items?

If you receive emails from the library system, you will receive an email stating that your items are ready for pickup, otherwise you will get a call from the library.

How do I schedule a curbside pickup?

You can call the library (315) 322-0322 to schedule a pickup time.  If you want to use email, please do not request same day pickup.

How long will it take for me to receive my items?

Items could take up to two weeks to arrive due to quarantining of items.

What is curbside pickup at the library?

Curbside pickup is a way to borrow library items without coming into contact with anyone else.

What can I borrow using curbside pickup?

Everything you can normally borrow can be borrowed using curbside pickup. If there is something you want to borrow that a hold cannot be place on it please call the library and let us know you are interested in borrowing that item.

Why Curbside pickup?

In order to be able to serve our patrons as well as to protect our staff, volunteers, and our high-risk population, the library has decided to offer this service. It helps us maintain social distancing, and allows us to offer some of our services safely. Please refer to the COVID-19 update pages for more information.

How do I return my library items?

Return all items in the outside library book drop. For the safety of all borrowers and library staff, we ask that patrons utilize the book drop for returning materials. This will allow staff to safely and properly process materials for lending again.

How long does the virus stay on library items?

Viruses dry up quickly on paper, libraries have received new recommendations to quarantine books for 96 hours. Studies have found that the Coronavirus on the inside pages on regular books will are no longer detectable after 72 hours. A new study(link is external), has found that on glossy pages and board books it takes 96 hours for the virus to become undetectable.  The library is quarantining all items coming into the library for 4 days. We ask that book pages not be sprayed, wiped, or otherwise made wet, as that would damage the book. You are free to use a disinfectant wipe on the plastic book cover, and to “quarantine” your books before use. Further, please wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your face, and do not cough or sneeze on the books.

How long is my loan period?

Due dates are the same as they have been, 2 weeks or 4 weeks depending on the item. Libraries work best when everyone shares responsibility – so even if we do not have fines, we ask that you please honor our checkout time limits. If materials are not returned, after enough time passes we would consider the book “lost” and a bill would be sent to replace the item.

Will things change

Yes. The Library Board of Trustees and Director do not come to these decisions lightly – the safety of our staff and patrons is our top priority. For these reasons we will be constantly evaluating our processes, protective equipment, cleaning materials, and guidance from local health officials. Specific to the curbside pickup service, we are ensuring staff has appropriate personal protective equipment, practicing social distancing while working, and quarantining returned books for 96 hours before handling.

Can I donate book I no longer want to the library?

Not right now. Due to the efforts to safely prepare our locations for socially distant services, unfortunately at this time we are not prepared to accept book donations at the library. Please do not leave donations on the curbside pickup table, and do not place donations in the book drop. We will gladly accept donations once again in the future, and will make that announcement when ready.
